Affiliate disclosure
Nevada Explorer is published by Voitto Virta LLC. This page says how the site makes money and the rules that keep that money away from the road answers. Last updated October 25, 2026.
Affiliate links
Some links on this site are affiliate links. If you book or buy through one, we earn a commission from the seller. You pay the same price you would pay going to the seller directly. The programmes and the pages their links appear on are listed below.
| Programme | Through | Where its links appear |
|---|---|---|
| Stay22 (hotels and rentals on Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com, Vrbo and others) | Stay22 | Every page. Stay22's script runs in your browser: it turns links to hotel and rental sites into affiliate links, and may add its own hotel links and lodging suggestions to a page's text. We also place labelled "Hotels in ..." search buttons and hotel maps in the "Where to stay" sections of the ski resort pages, the Lake Tahoe, Truckee, casino and airport guides and the town webcam pages, and the Las Vegas guides. It is kept out of the live road, chain-control and weather blocks. |
| DiscoverCars (rental cars at Reno-Tahoe and Las Vegas airports) | DiscoverCars, direct | One labelled box on the road pages, the "Is it open?" and chain-control pages and the ski resort pages, below the live road status, and on the Reno-Tahoe and Las Vegas airport car rental guides, after their answer. |
| Amazon Associates (traction devices, snow socks, chains and winter car kit) | Amazon, direct | Links to traction devices, snow socks, tire chains and winter car kit (shovel, snow brush, jump starter, emergency blankets) in the winter driving articles and packing lists, each labelled "Affiliate links" where it sits. |
| Viator (Lake Tahoe, Reno and Las Vegas tours and activities, lake cruises and ski transfers) | Viator, direct | Labelled boxes on the Lake Tahoe guides, the ski resort pages, the Virginia City, winter, snowshoe and casino guides, the monthly events pages and the Las Vegas guides (tours, day trips and shows), below any live road status: named tours, lake cruises, airport transfers to the resorts that have one, and on some pages Viator's own tour widget. |

The rules
- Labelled where it sits. Every affiliate link we place says "Affiliate link" in the same block, next to the link, and links back here. You should never need this page to find out that a link pays us.
- Hotel links are the exception, and the footer says so. Stay22's script works in your browser after the page has loaded. It turns links to hotel and rental sites into affiliate links, and it can add hotel links and lodging suggestions of its own, so they cannot carry a label one by one. Instead, the footer of every page that loads it says that hotel and rental links may earn us a commission.
- A commission never changes a road answer. Whether I-80, US 50 or the Mt Rose Highway is open, which chain control is in force and what the cameras show are read from Caltrans, Nevada DOT and the National Weather Service every five minutes. That code does not know whether there is a hotel to sell. If Donner Pass is closed, the page says closed, even on a night when a room in Truckee would earn us more than a clear road.
- Never inside the answer. The road status, the chain-control block, the closure details and the forecast at the top of a page carry no commercial link. An affiliate link, if a page has one, sits below them. Stay22's script is told to leave those blocks alone, and if it adds a link inside one anyway, the page turns it back into plain text.
- Paid placement says so. If a business ever pays for a place on a page, that place is marked "Sponsored" where it appears. Nothing on the site is sponsored today.
- Our own businesses say so too. If a page mentions a business that Voitto Virta LLC owns or has a stake in, the page says that next to the mention.
Advertising
Most pages carry display ads from Google AdSense. Those are not affiliate links: Google chooses the ads, they are marked as ads by Google, and we do not see who clicks them or endorse what they sell. What Google collects to show them is in the privacy policy.
