Understanding Chain Controls
Highway agencies enforce chain controls in stages based on the severity of the storm. These requirements apply to all vehicles, including those with four-wheel or all-wheel drive.
- R-1: Chains or snow tires required on all vehicles.
- R-2: Chains required on all vehicles except four-wheel or all-wheel drive with snow tires on all four wheels.
- R-3: Chains required on every vehicle, no exceptions. This is rare and usually precedes a full highway closure.
I-80: The Primary Route
Interstate 80 is the main artery connecting Reno to the Truckee and Tahoe area. It is a high-elevation route, climbing to 7,247 ft at the Castle Peak control point. When storms hit, chain controls are frequently implemented at multiple points, including Kingvale (6,076 ft) and the Donner Lake Interchange (6,404 ft).
Because this route crosses the Sierra at high elevations, it is the first to close during severe weather. US-50: The Southern Route
US-50 provides an alternative route to South Lake Tahoe. It climbs to 7,401 ft at Echo Summit. Controls are often implemented at lower elevations on this route compared to I-80, with checkpoints at places like Pollock Pines (3,982 ft) and Strawberry (5,728 ft).

SR-431: Mt. Rose Highway
The Mt. Rose Highway connects Reno directly to Incline Village. This is the highest-elevation route, reaching 8,887 ft at the summit. Because it is a mountain pass rather than an interstate, it does not have the same chain-control point data as I-80 or US-50, but it is frequently subject to closures during winter storms.

Do not attempt to use navigation apps to find "backroads" or unmaintained routes during a storm, as these are often impassable and dangerous.
