Which highway reaches which shore
Three paved paths connect Reno to Lake Tahoe. Each route targets a different quadrant of the lake basin and behaves differently when winter storms hit the Sierra crest.
SR-431 runs southwest from south Reno straight over the ridge into Incline Village on the north shore. This is the shortest path to northern Nevada beach towns, but it crosses extreme elevations. Interstate 80 heads west from Reno through the Truckee River canyon into California. Drivers exit at Truckee onto state routes to reach Tahoe City on the northwest shore. Consult the I-80 road conditions hub or glance through the I-80 webcams feed before committing to the canyon.
US-50 heads south through Carson City, climbs Spooner Summit, and descends into Zephyr Cove on the east shore before reaching South Lake Tahoe. Elevation and the order of closures
Elevation determines which highway shuts down first during major Sierra weather events. Cold air drops freezing precipitation at higher passes hours before valley corridors freeze over.
The SR-431 at Mt Rose Summit webcam sits at 8,887 ft. Further down the highway, the SR-431 at Mt. Rose Dugway webcam records at 8,854 ft, while the SR-431 at West Side Meadows webcam stands at 8,570 ft. Because SR-431 crests at 8,887 ft, NDOT frequently closes this mountain corridor first for avalanche mitigation.
Interstate 80 crests substantially lower on the western slope. The I-80 at Castle Peak webcam tracks conditions at 7,165 ft, and the I-80 at Donner Summit webcam sits at 7,221 ft. The difference between SR-431 at Mt Rose Summit at 8,887 ft and I-80 at Donner Summit at 7,221 ft is exactly 1,666 ft. That elevation gap frequently spares I-80 from early wind closures.
US-50 reaches the Tahoe basin over Spooner Summit. The US-50 at Spooner Summit webcam is positioned at 7,156 ft. That is 1,731 ft lower than SR-431 at Mt Rose Summit at 8,887 ft. Further west past the lake, the US-50 at Sierra at Tahoe / Echo Lake Eastbound webcam measures 6,909 ft, and the US-50 at Echo Summit webcam reaches 7,427 ft.
Alternate routes when your primary pass shuts down
When SR-431 closes at the summit gate, do not turn around toward home if you need Incline Village. Take I-80 west from Reno to Truckee, then circle southeast along the shoreline.
