Storm alerts
A notification on this device when chain control starts, changes or lifts, or a road closes or reopens. Pick your roads:
An alert is a heads-up that something changed, not a road report, and it can arrive a few minutes after the change. Before you drive, check Caltrans QuickMap or Nevada 511 (nvroads.com), or call 511. A few alerts a day at most; no account, no email, and you can turn them off here any time (what we keep).

What this camera shows
At 7,221 feet, this camera sits at the highest point among the nearby monitoring stations, effectively marking the peak of the pass. Because it is positioned directly at the Castle Peak chain-control point, this view reveals the immediate conditions at the summit, which often differ significantly from the lower elevations found at the Donner Lake Interchange or Kingvale cameras. When the view here shows accumulating snow while the lower cameras appear clear or merely wet, it indicates that chain controls are actively restricting traffic at the top of the grade.
This feed is live video, showing visibility and surface accumulation as they are rather than as they were a minute ago. If the frame appears dark or obscured, it is best to wait for the next refresh rather than assuming the road is blocked. Checking this view alongside the lower-elevation cameras helps determine if the storm level is rising or falling, providing essential context before beginning the climb.
