About Nevada Explorer
One page per road, showing whether it is open, where the chain controls are, and what the cameras see — instead of four official websites and a guess.
What this site does
The official sources are good but scattered. Caltrans publishes chain controls, closures and camera images for the California side of the Sierra. Nevada DOT publishes its own cameras and conditions for the Nevada side. The National Weather Service publishes the forecast at each pass. Answering "can I get to Tahoe this afternoon" means checking all three and knowing which control point matters.
Nevada Explorer pulls those feeds every few minutes and puts them on one page per road, with every camera on that road in the order you would drive past them. Nothing here is behind a login and nothing is invented — every number comes from an official feed and every page links back to it.
Where the data comes from
- Caltrans District 3 and District 9 — chain-control status, mainline closures and camera images for California. Public domain.
- Nevada DOT / nvroads.com — live camera streams for Nevada.
- National Weather Service — forecasts and active alerts at Reno, Donner Summit, Echo Summit and Mt Rose Summit. Public domain.
Every page shows how old its data is. If a feed has not refreshed, the page says so rather than showing you an old reading as if it were current.
Who owns the camera images
We do not own any of the camera pictures or streams on this site. Caltrans camera images are in the public domain under Caltrans's conditions of use, so you are free to reuse them. Nevada DOT's images and streams belong to Nevada DOT: we show them with credit, loaded straight from nvroads.com, and never copy or re-host them. To reuse one, ask Nevada DOT through nvroads.com.
What it is not
It is not official, and it is not a substitute for checking with Caltrans or NDOT before you drive. Cameras go offline, feeds lag, and a road can close between one refresh and the next. We are not affiliated with Caltrans, NDOT or the NWS.
Who runs it
Nevada Explorer is published by Voitto Virta LLC. If something is wrong, out of date, or a camera has moved, tell us — that is the fastest way it gets fixed.
The roads we cover
Roads and cameras are statewide. Reno–Tahoe is the region built out so far; the rest of Nevada comes later, and we would rather leave those sections empty than fill them with pages that say nothing.
