Sugar Bowl’s own snow report

Sugar Bowl’s own report (sugarbowl.com, last posted Apr 5, 3:57 PM PDT; read ) is not today’s: no lift is open or scheduled on it, so its depth figures are not repeated here. Before opening day and after closing, a resort’s page keeps the last season’s numbers. The gauge above is today’s.

We read Sugar Bowl’s report page on sugarbowl.com once an hour. Its figures appear here only while its season is running, which means a lift open, scheduled or on hold on a read in the last day and a half, and only when the report was posted within the last 30 hours. A resort’s base depth is the packed, groomed snow on its runs, often measured at mid-mountain, so it is rarely the same number as the gauge.

Where the snow is measured

The gauge is SNOTEL station Central Sierra Snow Lab (428:CA:SNTL), run by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. It stands 2.3 miles north-west of Sugar Bowl at 6,890 ft and reports every hour: snow depth from a sonic sensor over the ground, the water held in the snow from a pressure pillow, and the air temperature. The same gauge serves Boreal, which is nearby.

“New snow” here is how much deeper the snow is than 24 hours, 48 hours and 7 days earlier. Fresh snow settles as it lands and melts on warm afternoons, so a rise is the least that fell, and a fall can mean melt rather than wind. When a storm comes and goes inside the week, the deepest reading of the week is shown with its time. A reading older than six hours is not shown as current: the page says when the gauge last reported instead.
