Waste management services for Reno residents are facilitated through a franchise agreement with Waste Management. This program includes mandatory cart service for trash and recycling, along with specific provisions for excess waste and disposal trips.
Four Free Trips to the Transfer Station
Reno residential customers are allotted four free trips to the transfer station per year. These trips allow for the disposal of materials that do not fit within the standard collection parameters or exceed the capacity of regular curbside service.
If you plan to drive to the transfer station during winter months, ensure you check current road conditions. High-elevation routes or passes may require chains or experience closures. Before heading out, verify the status of local routes via the Road conditions hub or check the I-80 road conditions if your route takes you through or near mountain passes.
Excess Waste Stickers
In addition to standard weekly collection, customers receive 20 stickers per year for excess waste. These stickers are designed for use on your regular service day. When you have items that exceed your cart capacity, place the excess waste out for collection with a sticker attached. These stickers are valid for use throughout the year.
Single-Stream Recycling
The city utilizes a single-stream recycling program. Residents are provided with a dedicated cart for recyclable materials. The use of yellow and green crates is no longer required or supported for curbside collection. This system accepts a broader range of materials than previous methods, simplifying the sorting process for households.
If you have questions regarding specific items or need to adjust your cart options, contact Waste Management customer service at 775-329-8822. Waste Management recommends using the provided carts for at least 120 days before requesting a different size or configuration.

Green Waste and Composting
Waste Management now accepts green waste for composting at both the Transfer Station and the Lockwood Landfill. This service is intended to divert organic material from the general waste stream. Plastic Film Recycling Challenge
The City of Reno participates in the NexTrex Recycling Challenge. Bins for plastic film drop-off are located on the first and second floors of City Hall, at 1 E First St. This program is distinct from standard curbside recycling. Participants should review the Trex Acceptable Items webpage to ensure only compliant plastic film is deposited in these specific bins.
