Parks in Reno and Lake Tahoe: Access and Facilities

Parks here fall under three administrations, and which one you are dealing with decides what you have to do first.

The City of Reno runs 87 park facilities in the valley at about 4,500 ft, all reachable without a mountain drive. The Tahoe basin parks are California State Parks, 1,700 to 2,300 ft higher and behind a pass. The terrain parks are private, on the mountain, at 8,250 ft.

City of Reno parks

87 facilities, from Idlewild Park's 49 acres on the Truckee River down to single-block neighbourhood greens. No fee, no reservation and no account for ordinary use — walking in, using a playground or a trail needs nothing.

A household account is required only for organised programmes: sports leagues, youth activities, classes. It renews every two years, or sooner if your details change, and an email address is required to register online.

Two centres take paper forms in person:

Disability accommodations go on an Accommodations Request Form, and the department runs a scholarship programme for households that cannot meet programme fees. Park maintenance takes reports on 775-334-2270.

Kings Beach State Recreation Area

On the north shore, managed by California State Parks since November 2014, when it took over from the North Tahoe Public Utility District. The area is six parcels: Kings Beach Plaza, Coon Street, North Tahoe Beach, Moon Dunes Beach, Secline Beach and Sandy Beach.

The North Tahoe Events Center parking lot stays open to the public year-round. In winter State Parks and the utility district split the plowing, so the lot is usually cleared — but the lot being clear says nothing about whether you can get there.

The pier is under review. California State Parks and the California Tahoe Conservancy have run public workshops on rebuilding it, to widen access for pedestrians and boaters; nothing is built yet.

Getting there in winter

Kings Beach is at 6,250 ft and every approach crosses a pass:

• SR-28 along the north shore — the direct approach, and the one that closes with the lake-shore storms
• SR-267 over Brockway Summit at 7,179 ft from Truckee
• I-80 if you are coming across the Sierra first
• US-50 if you are routing round the south shore instead

Terrain parks at Mt Rose

Two, both at Mt Rose Ski Tahoe, reached by SR-431:

• Pondo — on the Ponderosa run at the bottom of Kit Carson Bowl, off the Northwest Express, Lakeview Express or Galena chairlifts
• DoubleDown — off the Mine Train run, under the Zephyr chairlift

The drive is the constraint rather than the parks. SR-431 climbs from 4,723 ft at the I-580 off-ramp to 8,887 ft at the highway summit, and our camera at the ski area reads 8,249 ft. Chain controls go up on that grade before they appear anywhere in the valley, so check SR-431 Mt Rose road conditions before leaving.

Features are built to graded difficulty under the "Smart Style" programme run by the National Ski Areas Association and Burton. Read the difficulty markings at the park entrance before dropping in; they are not the same grades as the runs.
