Because this location sits significantly lower than the mountain passes further west, such as Echo Summit at 7,401 feet, it often remains clear even when higher elevations are experiencing active storms or chain requirements. Watching the movement here helps determine if traffic is flowing freely or if congestion is building before vehicles reach the steeper, more challenging grades closer to the state line.
Since this feed provides a continuous video stream, it is particularly useful for observing how quickly conditions change. If the pavement appears wet or snow-covered here, it is a reliable indicator that precipitation is widespread, as this point is well below the major chain-control checkpoints in Meyers and Chiapa.
