The live feed above shows active restrictions reported by Caltrans District 3 and NDOT. When I-80 shuts at Donner Pass, US-50 over Echo Summit often serves as the only paved trans-Sierra corridor between Reno and Sacramento. Check both entries before rerouting, as severe storms can trigger concurrent restrictions or full closures on both highways.
Always confirm conditions with Caltrans or Nevada 511 before leaving cell coverage. We parse state feeds faster, but Caltrans and NDOT remain the authoritative dispatchers.
Summit Elevations and Snow Exposure
US-50 crosses the crest higher than I-80. Echo Summit sits at 7,427 ft, compared to 7,221 ft at Donner Summit. Further east on US-50, Spooner Summit reaches 7,156 ft between Lake Tahoe and Carson City.
Because Echo Summit stands at 7,427 ft, freezing levels catch US-50 earlier in borderline storms. However, I-80 carries higher overall traffic volume and sustained elevation over 6,000 ft. West of Donner, the roadway stays above 6,095 ft through Kingvale and 6,692 ft at Soda Springs before cresting Castle Peak at 7,165 ft. Compare live conditions at the US-50 at Echo Summit webcam and the I-80 at Donner Summit webcam.
Why I-80 Closes First
I-80 is an interstate freight artery with multilane grades. Spun-out commercial trucks frequently block all lanes on the steeper pitches between Kingvale (6,095 ft) and Donner Summit (7,221 ft). When multiple tractor-trailers jackknife across the lanes, Caltrans must close the entire freeway to run plows and tow rigs.
US-50 carries fewer semi-trucks, but it features narrower canyon alignments and tighter curves. Caltrans works to keep both corridors open, yet spin-outs create distinct hazards on each route. Track the broader corridor status on the I-80 road conditions page.
Understanding Chain Restrictions
Caltrans and NDOT enforce three sequential restriction tiers during winter storms:
- R-1: Chains or snow tires required on all vehicles.
- R-2: Chains required on all vehicles except four-wheel or all-wheel drive with snow tires on all four wheels.
- R-3: Chains required on every vehicle, no exceptions.
An R-0 status in the raw data feed indicates no active controls. R-3 conditions are rare on either corridor. When conditions deteriorate past R-2, state agencies usually close the pass rather than run R-3 checkpoints.
Eastbound approaches on US-50 show incoming weather near the Sierra at Tahoe / Echo Lake Eastbound webcam at 6,909 ft. On I-80, check higher checkpoints at the I-80 at Castle Peak webcam (7,165 ft) and the I-80 at Soda Springs - Eastbound webcam (6,692 ft).
When Both Corridors Close
Strong atmospheric rivers often overwhelm both passes at the same time. If high winds, zero visibility, or avalanche clearing shuts Echo Summit (7,427 ft) alongside Donner Summit (7,221 ft), no immediate northern bypass exists.
Do not divert onto unmaintained mountain roads or narrow summer shortcuts. When both corridors show full closures, delay travel in Reno, Carson City, or Sacramento until Caltrans plow teams clear the right-of-way.
