The short answer: "the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas" means one of two places. Grand Canyon West is Hualapai land, about 130 miles and 2.5 hours away, with a $99 All-Access Pass. The South Rim is the national park, about 275 miles and 4.5 hours or more each way. Only the West Rim fits in a day by car.
Go between October and April, and watch the clock. From Nov 2, 2026 to Mar 13, 2027, Arizona runs 1 hour ahead of Las Vegas.
| Grand Canyon West | South Rim (national park) | Helicopter with a landing | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Run by | The Hualapai Tribe | The National Park Service | Maverick Helicopters, sold on Viator |
| From the Strip | About 130 miles, about 2.5 hours | About 275 miles, 4.5 hours or more | From Maverick's Las Vegas terminal |
| Cost in 2026 | All-Access Pass $99; other packages priced on the day | $35 a vehicle or $20 a person; nonresidents 16+ add $100 each | On the listing |
| Time it takes | A long day | Better as an overnight | 2.5 hours |
Grand Canyon West is not the national park
The resort's own FAQ says it "is not part of the Grand Canyon National Park", which sits five hours away. It is owned and run by the Hualapai Tribe, based in Peach Springs, Arizona, on the tribe's sovereign land.
The $99 All-Access Pass covers the Skywalk, the zipline, guided tours and the shuttle. The FAQ gives 8 a.m. opening, last entry 4:30 p.m. and closing at 6 p.m., or 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. in summer. Other answers on the same page give different times, so confirm on grandcanyonwest.com before you set off.
On the Skywalk, phones are allowed but cameras, purses and backpacks are not. Lockers are free.
The drive west, and the clock
The route runs south on US-93 and I-11 past Boulder City, over the bypass bridge at Hoover Dam and into Arizona. The resort says the main access roads are paved. A rental car from the LAS Rent-A-Car Center is enough.
Arizona keeps Mountain Standard Time all year. Until Nov 1, 2026 its clocks match Las Vegas. From Nov 2 they run 1 hour ahead, so a 4:30 p.m. last entry is 3:30 p.m. on your phone's Las Vegas time. That lasts until Mar 13, 2027.
The South Rim: the national park
Plan on about 275 miles: past Hoover Dam to Kingman, east on I-40 to Williams, then north on AZ-64. The Park Service puts Williams to the South Entrance at about 60 minutes. Door to door is 4.5 hours or more each way.
Entry is $35 per private vehicle for 7 days, $30 per motorcycle and $20 per person on foot. Under-16s are free. New in 2026, each non-US resident aged 16 or older pays a $100 nonresident fee on top. Two adults from outside the US in one car pay $235 at the gate.
The Park Service says an America the Beautiful pass waives that fee; for nonresidents the pass costs $250. US residents pay $80 for the same pass, and a Grand Canyon-only annual pass is $70.
The North Rim is a different trip. The Park Service lists it as open May 15 to Oct 15, so it is closed now. That page also mentions the 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire closure and was last updated in December 2025, so check its 2026 status before planning next summer.
Heat on the West Rim road
From June to September, Las Vegas averages highs from 94.9°F to 104.5°F under the 1991–2020 normals. Leave early, fill the tank before you leave town and carry water in the car. See Las Vegas weather by month for the cooler weeks.
Who should not try the South Rim as a day trip
Anyone driving alone, and anyone without a full day to spare. It is about 550 miles there and back, 9 hours or more at the wheel. The guided South Rim day on Viator runs 12.5 hours. Stay a night near the park, or take a guided day.
The Las Vegas tours guide compares the guided days. Nonresidents travelling as a family should price the $100-a-head fee first.
If you want the national park's rim trails, the West Rim is not a substitute. If you want a canyon view and a glass bridge inside a day, it is. More day trips are on the Las Vegas guide.
Grand Canyon West sits about 130 miles from the Strip; the South Rim is about 275 miles by way of Kingman and Williams.
