When traveling through the mountains, check I-80 road conditions for chain control updates. For travel south toward the Eastern Sierra, monitor US-395 road conditions. If commuting or visiting the Tahoe Basin, SR-431 Mt Rose road conditions provide the most direct route from Reno to the lake.

Outdoor Recreation in the Region
Carson City maintains several beginner-friendly trails for walking, biking, and jogging. These paths serve as an introduction to the regional trail network:
- Linear Ditch Trail: A paved, stroller-friendly path that passes through residential neighborhoods, meadows, and areas with highway proximity. Parking is available at the Fremont Elementary lot on Saliman Road.
- V&T Multi-Use Trail: Accessible from a dirt parking lot off Murphy Drive via Combs Canyon Road. This trail offers approximately 1.5 miles of paved ground, with additional unpaved turnoffs to the west.
- Bigelow Multi-Use Path: A wide, maintained route in south Carson City suitable for families.
- Mexican Ditch Trail System: Accessible from Korean War Veterans Memorial Park, Moffat Open Space, Silver Saddle Ranch, and Carson River Park. This system features decomposed granite trails along the Carson River.
- Upper Ash Canyon: Located at the top of Ash Canyon Road between the water tanks. This area includes a gravel road and single-track options with elevation gain.
Boat Inspections
If relocating with a boat, be aware that the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency requires watercraft inspections to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species.
