Winter sports access in the Truckee and Lake Tahoe region requires monitoring mountain passes. Before driving to any ski area, verify conditions via I-80 road conditions, SR-89 road conditions, SR-267 road conditions, or US-50 road conditions.

Tubing and Snowplay Resorts
Several resorts operate dedicated tubing and snowplay zones. Policies and equipment vary by location.
- Tahoe Donner Snowplay: Entry fees include sleds and tubes. The area features tubing lanes and a free-play zone for building snowmen.
- Sugar Bowl Resort (Sugar Rush): Features 10 tubing lanes and a 500-foot covered moving carpet for return trips.
- Soda Springs Resort: Planet Kids is designed for younger children and includes a tubing carousel and mini magic carpet. Tube Town offers 10 groomed lanes for older participants with a 400-foot surface lift.
- Boreal Mountain: Offers 90-minute tubing sessions. Tubes are provided.
- Palisades Tahoe: The SnoVentures Activity Zone offers standard tubing. Disco Tubing occurs from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on select dates, featuring lasers and music. Sessions last 55 minutes.
- Donner Ski Ranch: Offers tubing with no height restrictions. Tickets are valid for 2-hour sessions and are sold at the ticket window.
Public Snowplay Areas
Non-resort areas are available for sledding, snowshoeing, and snowplay. These locations lack the amenities of resorts; visitors must pack out all trash and gear.
- Glacier Way Trailhead: Located in Tahoe Donner. Parking is available, though lots fill quickly on weekends.
- West End Beach (Donner Lake): Open space for snowplay and snowman building.
- Truckee River Regional Park: Features flat fields for snowplay and an ice skating rink.
- Johnson Canyon: Managed by the Truckee Donner Land Trust; accessible via the Donner Lake exit off I-80.
- Old Greenwood Conservation Easement: Parking is cleared at the northwest corner of the Overland Trail exit off I-80. No restrooms or trash facilities are available.
- McIver Dairy Meadow: Street parking is available. Use only designated snowplay areas to protect native habitat.
Nordic Skiing
The Lake Tahoe region contains multiple cross-country ski areas. These facilities provide lessons, rentals, and groomed trails:

Transportation and Shuttles
Tahoe Truckee Area Regional Transit (TART) operates free Park & Ride shuttles from Truckee to major ski areas.
- Palisades Tahoe: Weekend shuttles run from Truckee High School lower field lots every 15 minutes, 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
- Northstar California: Shuttles run hourly from Lift Truckee Workspace, 7:09 a.m. to 5:09 p.m.
- Sugar Bowl: Shuttles run from the Cold Stream Road transit center with five daily loops at 7:10 a.m., 8:10 a.m., 12:10 p.m., 4:10 p.m., and 5:10 p.m.
TART Connect provides on-demand microtransit within Truckee town limits from 6:30 a.m. to midnight daily, including service to Northstar Village. Fixed-route buses on Highway 89, Highway 267, and local Truckee routes also operate daily.
