The City of Reno Parks and Recreation department facilitates adaptive sports and recreational programming for individuals with physical and developmental disabilities. These programs operate at various facilities within Reno, requiring participants to monitor regional weather conditions, especially during winter months when travel from the Tahoe Basin or Truckee may be impacted by snow.
Adaptive Sports Programs
The City of Reno offers several sports-based programs, some of which are seasonal.
- Wheelchair Pickleball: Offered seasonally from September to April. This program is designed for all skill levels.
- Wheelchair Rugby: A competitive sport for individuals with physical disabilities affecting all four extremities. Players use specialized "Rugby Wheelchairs."
- Wheelchair Skills and Drills: Focuses on conditioning and sport-specific drills, including wheelchair basketball and power soccer.
- Sled Hockey: Held at Reno Ice. Equipment and on-ice instruction are provided. Participants are required to wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. No prior experience is necessary.
- Dance for All: A collaborative series between the City of Reno and the City of Sparks specifically for teens and adults with special needs.
