The Nevada Museum of Art is at 160 West Liberty Street in downtown Reno, with 15,000 square feet of gallery space given largely to the landscape and cultural history of the Sierra.
Hours: Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Thursday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Closed Monday.
Admission, 2026: $15 general, $13 students and seniors, $3 for children 6–14, free for children 5 and under and for members. Free for Nevada high-school students with ID, and for TMCC, WNC and UNR students with ID.

Regional Exhibitions
The museum focuses on the intersection of art and the environment. Past exhibitions, such as "Tahoe: A Visual History," utilized the entire gallery space to display approximately 400 individual artworks. These collections often feature pieces rarely seen by the public, including privately held works and items sourced from international collections.
The curation frequently highlights the cultural significance of the region, including the history of the Washoe people. Exhibitions have featured Washoe basketry, documenting the craftsmanship of individuals such as Louisa Keyser (Datsolalee), Scees Bryant, Lena Dick, and Sarah Mayo. These displays provide context for the commercialization of Native basketry during the American Arts and Crafts Movement.
The museum also documents architectural history in the Tahoe region. This includes works by architects like Julia Morgan, who designed the Bow Bay estate, and Frank Lloyd Wright, who conceptualized a Summer Colony in Emerald Bay.
Getting there from the lake
Downtown Reno is at about 4,500 ft and the museum is a five-minute walk from the Virginia Street arch, so the museum itself is never the problem. The pass is.
From South Lake Tahoe it is US-50 over Echo Summit at 7,377 ft. From the north shore or Truckee it is I-80 over Donner at 7,239 ft, or SR-431 at 8,887 ft, which closes first of the three.

Understanding the Landscape
The collections place the Sierra against the rest of American landscape art — the Grand Canyon, Yosemite — including 19th-century paintings of Donner Lake and the peaks around it.
Those older works romanticised the place. Contemporary acquisitions set against them carry the account the paintings left out: the Chinese labourers who built the railroad that made the crossing possible at all.
The museum also commissions contemporary works. For example, previous exhibitions included pieces by Maya Lin, such as a large depiction of the Tahoe watershed created from straight pins, and works by Phyllis Shafer, who has produced panoramic paintings of the lake.
A Thursday evening is the quiet slot, with the extra two hours to 8 p.m. and the downtown lots emptying after 5. If you are driving up the east side of the Sierra, US-395 is the route to check.
