US-50 West Toward Sacramento

Driving west out of town toward Placerville and Sacramento means climbing from the lake basin to Echo Summit. Town cameras sit near lake level: the US-50 at South Lake Tahoe / Ski Run webcam shows live video at 6,256 feet, while the US-50 at South Lake Tahoe / SR-89 webcam shows live video at 6,286 feet.

Six miles southwest of town, the camera at US-50 at Myers shows live video at 6,345 feet. Caltrans runs a chain checkpoint at Meyers at 6,341 feet. Beyond Meyers, the road climbs to Echo Summit at 7,401 feet, which is 1,056 feet higher than the Myers camera and 1,145 feet higher than Ski Run Boulevard. Highway 89 North and South

Highway 89 splits out of town in two directions. Northwest toward Tahoma and Emerald Bay, winter driving faces steep elevation changes along the lake. The SR-89 at South Lake Tahoe / US-50 webcam shows live video at 6,286 feet, located 1.8 miles from town.

The road climbs past the chain point at Ebrights at 6,289 feet to Emerald Bay at 6,624 feet, which is 338 feet higher than the junction camera. Bliss State Park reaches 6,840 feet. Check highway 89 tahoe city emerald bay conditions for winter gate closures on that stretch.

South on SR-89 toward Markleeville, the route passes Christmas Valley at 6,505 feet and tops out at Luther Pass at 7,732 feet. That pass sits 1,446 feet above the junction camera in town. Review SR-89 road conditions before heading over the pass.

US-50 East and Kingsbury Grade Toward Reno

Leaving South Lake Tahoe toward Carson City or Reno involves two routes. US-50 runs along the east shore, where the US-50 at Warrior Way webcam shows live video 5.8 miles from town at 6,259 feet.

The alternate route drops into the Carson Valley via Kingsbury Grade (SR-207). The camera at SR-207 at Daggett Summit / Tramway provides live video 5.9 miles from town at 7,338 feet.
