Do I need chains on Donner Pass right now?

The forecast here is for the base village in Olympic Valley, off SR-89 between Truckee and Tahoe City. The upper mountain gets more snow than the valley floor; the base is the number for the road in and the parking lots.

The drive from the Bay Area crosses Donner Pass on I-80 and then follows SR-89 south along the Truckee River. Donner Summit is higher than the valley, so a storm can be snow on the pass and rain at the base: compare the two forecasts.

Where this forecast comes from

The National Weather Service forecasts on a grid of cells about 2.5 kilometres across, and updates it through the day. This page reads the cell that holds the base village in Olympic Valley: Palisades Tahoe, issued by the NWS office in Reno, a cell whose average height is 6,283 ft. A cell’s average height can sit well below a summit, which is why the snow level is compared with the place itself. The snow total is the sum of the forecast’s own amounts for the next 72 hours; nothing is added to it, and no range is invented around it.
