An alert is a heads-up that something changed, not a road report, and it can arrive a few minutes after the change. Before you drive, check Caltrans QuickMap or Nevada 511 (nvroads.com), or call 511. A few alerts a day at most; no account, no email, and you can turn them off here any time (what we keep).

Two forecasts on one page, because "Mt Rose" means two places about a mile apart: SR-431 at Mt Rose Summit, 8,911 feet, the highest year-round pass in the Sierra, and Mt Rose Ski Tahoe's Main Lodge just below it. Both sit on the east side of the crest, in the Reno NWS office's area, and both are well above Reno at about 4,500 feet.
The highway is the short way between Reno and Incline Village, and because it is so high it often has snow when the valley has none. The snow level is the number to watch: a storm with a 7,000-foot snow level is snow at the summit and the ski area and rain in south Reno.

Where this forecast comes from
The National Weather Service forecasts on a grid of cells about 2.5 kilometres across, and updates it through the day. This page reads the cell that holds SR-431 at Mt Rose Summit and the cell that holds the Main Lodge on SR-431: Mt Rose Summit, issued by the NWS office in Reno, a cell whose average height is 8,711 ft; Mt Rose Ski Tahoe, issued by the NWS office in Reno, a cell whose average height is 7,864 ft. A cell’s average height can sit well below a summit, which is why the snow level is compared with the place itself. The snow total is the sum of the forecast’s own amounts for the next 72 hours; nothing is added to it, and no range is invented around it.
The full NWS forecast, with the forecaster’s discussion, is at forecast.weather.gov for Mt Rose Summit and forecast.weather.gov for Mt Rose Ski Tahoe. For avalanche danger in the backcountry, read the Sierra Avalanche Center, not a snow total.
