Access and Parking
The primary access point is the Michael D. Thompson trailhead. Parking at the trailhead can be limited depending on the season and time of day. If the trailhead parking lot is full, an alternative is to park just west of the intersection of Woodchuck Circle and Plateau Road. This overflow parking adds approximately two miles to the total hike, as it connects to the Steamboat Ditch trail before linking to the Hunter Creek Trail at the first creek crossing. The connection point is marked by a large metal bridge on the left side of the trail.
Before heading to the trailhead, hikers should check the Road conditions hub for any regional closures, especially during winter months when local roads may be impacted by snow. If traveling to the area from further afield, check I-80 road conditions or SR-431 Mt Rose road conditions to ensure transit routes are clear.

Trail Conditions and Terrain
The trail is categorized as moderate rather than difficult, though it contains rocky sections that require appropriate footwear and hiking poles. The route is ecologically diverse, beginning in a desert environment characterized by sage and rabbitbrush. In early summer, the landscape features yellow mule’s ear flowers.
As the trail proceeds into the canyon, the vegetation changes. Approximately two miles in, the environment shifts to low aspen, willow, and cottonwood trees before transitioning into a pine grove. This section is shaded, which provides relief during summer months.
The waterfall, which serves as the primary destination, is located just under three miles from the trailhead. To reach the best vantage point, hikers must cross to the east side of the creek. This crossing uses logs and can be slippery.
Seasonal Considerations
While the trail is accessible, conditions vary by season. In the summer, the trail experiences high temperatures, making early starts necessary to avoid heat. In the spring, fall, and winter, the trail is less crowded. The waterfall remains shaded throughout its course and the water temperature stays cold. Hikers planning to spend time near the waterfall should prepare for cooler temperatures in that specific area, regardless of the heat on the lower, exposed sections of the trail.
