Reno and Sparks
- Nevada Museum of Art: This is the only accredited art museum in the state. It includes a café and a gift shop.
- National Automobile Museum: This facility displays over 200 vintage and rare automobiles, including vehicles from the Harrah’s Collection.
- The Discovery (Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum): This museum provides hands-on science, technology, and art exhibits.
Carson City
Carson City is located approximately 30 miles south of Reno. Drivers typically access the area via US-395 road conditions.
- Nevada State Museum: Housed in a historic U.S. Mint building, this museum features the historic Coin Press No. 1, which operated from 1870 to 1893. Exhibits include "Nevada's Changing Earth," "Nevada: A People and Place Throughout Time," and "Under One Sky." Admission is $8 for adults and free for visitors 17 and under.
- Nevada State Railroad Museum: This museum displays locomotives, artifacts, and the Carson & Tahoe Lumber & Fluming Company Locomotive No. 1 (the Glenbrook). Admission is $8 for adults and free for visitors 17 and under.
- Stewart Indian School Cultural Center & Museum: This site documents the history of the Stewart Indian School, which operated from 1890 to 1980. It is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Nevada State Capitol (Battle Born Hall): The building is open for self-guided tours. It contains the "Trailblazing Nevada" museum. Entrance to the building and museum is free.
- Jack C. Davis Observatory: Located at Western Nevada College, this facility hosts free star parties on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month.

Truckee and Placer County
The Heritage Trail Museums Tour includes 29 partner museums spanning from Roseville to North Lake Tahoe. The 2026 tour runs from June 6 through September 12. Participating sites include the Museum of Truckee History, the Old Jail Museum, and the Truckee Railroad Museum.
Visitors traveling to the Tahoe region should check I-80 road conditions and US-50 road conditions before departure, as weather can affect access to mountain museums. Throughout the summer, participating Heritage Trail museums offer free admission on select dates, with activities including guided tours and demonstrations. Visitors can collect stamps on a "Get-Up-And-Go" card at participating locations to qualify for prize drawings. Cards must be submitted by 4 p.m. on September 12, 2026.
