December is when Lake Tahoe turns into a winter resort. Every ski area should be running by the middle of the month, the villages light their trees, and the snow comes in earnest.
Tahoe City's 1991–2020 normal for December is 36.2 inches of snow, nearly four times November's 9.4, and its normal high and low are 39.7°F and 20.7°F in December. South Lake Tahoe Airport normally reaches 42.8°F by day and falls to 18.0°F at night (NOAA).
The two busy stretches are the weekends before Christmas and the week from December 26 to New Year's Day, when the lake roads carry the most traffic of the winter and a storm can hold it at the chain checkpoints.
- Roadwork between Spooner Burn and Marlette Creek, traffic getting through — road work; until 3:30 p.m. Oct 23

More holiday events in Reno and on the lake, with Christmas Day dinners and tree recycling, are on Christmas in Reno–Tahoe, and every listing for the month is in December 2026 events.
New Year's Eve 2026
- Palisades Tahoe: the NYE Glowstick Parade and Fireworks on December 31, then an after party.
- M.S. Dixie II: a New Year's Eve dinner cruise from Zephyr Cove, $195 a person, with a three-course dinner, live music and a champagne toast.
- Granlibakken: night sledding on December 31.

Reno's casinos and the drive back over the hill at 1 a.m. are on New Year's Eve in Reno and Tahoe.
Skating, and what else runs in December
- Heavenly Village ice rink, open-air, four sessions a day. The 2025–26 price was $25 for 12 and over and $20 for ages 4 to 11.
- Northstar Village rink, free, noon to 9 p.m. weather permitting, with paid skate rental.
- Tahoe City Winter Sports Park, open from November 28 for skating ($20 a session in 2025–26), with sledding once there is snow.
- Kirkwood targets December 4 and Diamond Peak "early December", the last two resorts to open. The rest open in November; the ski opening dates page has each one's own word.
Sledding hills, Sno-Parks, snowshoe trails and the sightseeing lifts are on Lake Tahoe in winter.
No Christmas tree permits in the Tahoe basin
The Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit's Christmas tree permit is "temporarily paused", the Forest Service says, so there is no cutting inside the basin this year. Permits for the forests around it, and where to use them, are on Christmas tree permits in Nevada's forests.
The drive
In December the lake roads go from clear to R-2 in an afternoon. SR-89 past Emerald Bay closes during and after big storms, which cuts the west shore in two; check its status page before planning a loop. The live chain answers for Mt Rose, Echo Summit, Kingsbury Grade and Donner Pass update every five minutes. What R-1, R-2 and R-3 require is on the chain control levels page.
