Summer in Reno involves managing high temperatures and potential weather hazards. Planning for these conditions is necessary for outdoor activities. The National Weather Service utilizes the "HeatRisk" tool, which incorporates NWS forecasts and CDC heat-health data to identify potentially dangerous heat over a 7-day period.

Visitors and residents should monitor the local forecast before departing. If traveling to higher elevations, such as the Sierra Nevada, weather conditions can differ significantly from the valley floor. Even in summer, some areas experience winter-like conditions. Before heading out, review Road conditions hub for any closures or alerts.

Summer Safety

Severe weather remains a risk during summer months. Lightning, flash flooding, and wildfires are documented hazards. When in off-grid areas without cellular service, a NOAA Weather Radio is a method to receive warnings. If planning a trip to the coast, be aware of rip currents, which account for an average of 75 fatalities annually.

Sierra Kids Program

The City of Reno operates the Sierra Kids program, which provides supervised environments for children ages 5–12. This is a before- and after-school program, not a summer camp. It follows the Washoe County School District schedule.

Registration is online. If a site is full, users can join a waitlist. The program is closed on specific holidays, including July 4th. Sierra Kids operates at the following elementary schools:

For registration assistance, contact the Youth Office at 775-334-4280.

Accessibility Programs

For families seeking programs for children with mobility needs, the Medical Therapy Unit (MTU) in nearby Newcastle, California, offers a "Tiny Wheelie Explorers Playgroup." This program assists children in learning to operate power wheelchairs through mobility and safety skill-building games.

Regional Travel

Families often travel from Reno to the Lake Tahoe area. The drive requires navigating mountain passes where conditions can change. Check I-80 road conditions and SR-431 Mt Rose road conditions before departure. For general travel planning, consult US-395 road conditions.
