Virginia City is 23 miles southeast of Reno, about 40 minutes, and sits at 6,200 ft — some 1,700 ft above the valley. It is the Comstock Lode town, and effectively one long street.
The drive
US-395 south, then SR-341 east — the Geiger Grade, which climbs over Geiger Summit at 6,789 ft before dropping into the town. That is higher than Virginia City itself and higher than Spooner Summit on the way to Tahoe.
The grade is a 1860s alignment: steep, tight and with little shoulder. It is the reason this is a road question and not just a drive. Snow accumulates there while Reno stays clear, and the summit takes restrictions on days the valley sees nothing.

What is actually there
Everything on C Street is walkable — the street is SR-341 running through the town, so traffic and pedestrians share it.
- Virginia & Truckee Railroad — a 35-minute ride on the original 1869 alignment, leaving hourly from about 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The season runs from Memorial Day weekend into October, steam and diesel, with themed services later in the year.
- Piper's Opera House — the present building dates from 1885, put up by John Piper after his 1878 house burned. Open April to October for tours and events.
Both are seasonal. A February visit is the town, the saloons and the view, with the railroad shut.
When to go
May to October is the working season: everything is open and the grade is clear.
Winter is the quiet, cheap and genuinely atmospheric version, but the drive is the risk. At 6,200 ft the town holds snow well after Reno has thawed, and Geiger Summit at 6,789 ft is the part that closes.
Virginia City is not on the way to Lake Tahoe — it is the opposite direction from SR-431 and the lake. Combining the two makes a long day, not a short detour.
