January is designated Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month. Multiple resorts in the Reno-Tahoe region offer structured lessons for first-timers, intermediate, and advanced participants.
Resort Lesson Options
- Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe: Offers half-day or full-day lessons for children ages 4-12. Private lessons are available for up to four guests. Two hours of individualized instruction is provided.
- Tahoe Donner: Provides half-day group lessons and one- or three-hour private lessons for adults and children. Equipment rental is available on-site.
- Diamond Peak: Features group lessons for children ages 3-6 at the Child Ski Center and lessons at the Ski & Ride Center for ages 7 and older. Packages include a beginner lift ticket and a 1.75-hour group lesson.
- Northstar California: Offers small group and private lessons for first-timers, as well as family private lessons.
- Boreal Mountain Resort: Provides private and family lessons. The "Take 3, Ride FREE" program grants a free season pass upon completion of three lessons.
- Palisades Tahoe: Offers half-day private or small group lessons. Beginners utilize dedicated slopes. Adult first-timers may qualify for a "Learn to Ski Afternoon" special at the Alpine base.
- Sugar Bowl: Includes a First Timer Ski or Snowboard Package, which bundles a half-day lesson, all-mountain lift ticket, and rental equipment.
- Granlibakken Tahoe: Offers beginner lesson packages and half-priced skiing and sledding day tickets for overnight guests.
- Homewood Mountain Resort: Lessons are available seven days a week. The resort features "Happy Park" for first-time skiers.
- Soda Springs: Offers group and private lessons, plus access to the "Mountain Adventure" area, which includes Planet Kids and the Woodward Start Park.
- Donner Ski Ranch: Focuses on beginner terrain with wide, open slopes.
Transportation and Access
Road conditions fluctuate during the winter season. Before departing, check I-80 road conditions and SR-431 Mt Rose road conditions for current chain control status.

The Tahoe Truckee Area Regional Transit (TART) provides free shuttle services to reduce traffic.
- Palisades Tahoe: Weekend Park & Ride shuttles run every 15 minutes from the Truckee High School lower field lots between 7:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
- Northstar California: Hourly shuttles depart from the Lift Truckee Workspace between 7:09 a.m. and 5:09 p.m.
- Sugar Bowl: Five loops run from the Cold Stream Rd. transit center at 7:10 a.m., 8:10 a.m., 12:10 p.m., 4:10 p.m., and 5:10 p.m.
TART Connect operates within Truckee town limits daily from 6:30 a.m. to midnight, with on-demand night service to Northstar Village. Fixed-route buses on Highway 89 and Highway 267 also provide connections to North Tahoe ski areas. Check SR-89 road conditions and SR-267 road conditions for updates on these routes.
Planning Your Trip
Resort lesson availability can change, and advance booking is required at many locations, including Tahoe Donner and Homewood. Confirm specific lesson times and age requirements directly with the resort before traveling.
When driving to the mountains, verify the status of mountain passes using US-50 road conditions if your destination is South Lake Tahoe. Always carry tire chains, even if your vehicle is equipped with four-wheel or all-wheel drive, as chain controls are frequently implemented on these routes during winter storms.
