Storm alerts
A notification on this device when chain control starts, changes or lifts, or a road closes or reopens. Pick your roads:
An alert is a heads-up that something changed, not a road report, and it can arrive a few minutes after the change. Before you drive, check Caltrans QuickMap or Nevada 511 (nvroads.com), or call 511. A few alerts a day at most; no account, no email, and you can turn them off here any time (what we keep).

What this camera shows
This view sits at 6,256 feet, placing it lower in elevation than both the Nevada Stateline and Dollar Hill control points. Because of this position, the pavement here often remains clear of snow even when chain controls are active just a few miles away in either direction. Drivers checking this feed can gauge whether precipitation is accumulating at lake level or if conditions are merely wet. If this frame shows snow sticking to the ground while the higher cameras at Tahoe City or Crystal Bay show more severe buildup, it indicates that winter conditions are pushing down from the higher elevations toward the shoreline.
This camera streams live video rather than posting a new still each minute. If the view appears obscured by heavy fog or darkness, wait for the next update rather than assuming the road is blocked. Relying on this feed alongside the higher-elevation cameras helps determine if the storm intensity is increasing or if the lower lake-level sections are beginning to clear.
SR-28: questions answered
Chain-control points on SR-28
Caltrans does not control the whole road at once — it sets controls at whichever point matches the snow level, so the same storm produces controls at different places on different days. These are the California-side points, highest first:
| Point | Elevation | Near | Now |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nevada Stateline | 6,391 ft | Kings Beach | Clear |
| Lardin Way (Dollar Hill) | 6,295 ft | Carnelian Bay | Clear |
| Tahoe City (SR28/89 Jct) | 6,256 ft | Tahoe City | Clear |
