What this camera shows
This live video feed provides a direct view of conditions at the 8,887-foot peak of the pass. Because this camera sits at a higher elevation than both the West Side Meadows feed at 8,570 feet and the Mt. Rose Dugway feed at 8,854 feet, it serves as the primary indicator for the most severe weather conditions on the route. When lower cameras show rain or slush, this view often captures the transition to accumulating snow or drifting conditions, offering the most accurate assessment of whether the summit remains passable.
Since this is a live video stream rather than a static image, it reveals real-time traffic flow rather than just pavement conditions. You can observe whether vehicles are moving freely or if traffic has stalled due to spinouts or heavy accumulation. If the higher elevation reveals whiteout conditions or stopped traffic, it provides immediate evidence that conditions at the summit have deteriorated beyond what the lower cameras indicate.
