In the Sierra Nevada, cell service is frequently unavailable in canyons and at higher elevations. When driving mountain passes like I-80 road conditions or US-50 road conditions, radio remains the most reliable method for receiving continuous weather information and emergency hazard alerts.
NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards
NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards (NWR) is a nationwide network of radio stations broadcasting continuous weather information directly from the nearest National Weather Service office. It functions as the "Voice of NOAA's National Weather Service" and provides official warnings, watches, and forecasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Because NWR is an "All Hazards" network, it broadcasts information for natural disasters, such as avalanches or wildfires, as well as public safety alerts like AMBER alerts or 911 telephone outages. Receiving these broadcasts requires a special radio receiver or scanner capable of tuning into the VHF public service band.

Amateur "HAM" Radio and SKYWARN
Amateur radio, commonly known as "Ham" radio, serves as a decentralized communication network during emergencies. In the Reno-Tahoe area, many licensed radio operators participate in the SKYWARN program.
SKYWARN is a nationwide network of volunteer weather spotters trained by the National Weather Service. These volunteers provide ground-truth reports on significant or severe weather events, including heavy snow, flooding, hail, and severe thunderstorms. These reports assist the National Weather Service in refining forecasts and issuing warnings for the region.
While SKYWARN is a volunteer effort, the information gathered is integrated into the broader public safety data stream. Radio amateurs also participate in the MAROB program, which allows for voluntary marine observations, relevant for those monitoring weather conditions near Lake Tahoe.
Monitoring Conditions
Before relying solely on radio, verify the current status of the road you intend to travel. Conditions on high-elevation routes can change rapidly.
