What this camera shows
At 5,885 feet, this view sits right at the West River Street chain-control point, at about the same height as the checkpoints near Prosser Dam Road about 2 miles away and Hobart Mills about 6 miles away. Because these locations share essentially the same elevation, winter conditions here reflect what is happening across the entire valley floor surrounding the town. Looking at this feed shows whether restrictions are actively being enforced at the checkpoint or if traffic is moving through without stopping.
The next camera up the corridor at Olympic Valley sits higher, where freezing precipitation often takes hold earlier during borderline storms. Watching the live video stream here helps determine if slush and accumulation are descending toward the valley, or if roads remain bare pavement before climbing toward the passes. If the pavement is whitening here, chain requirements typically encompass the lower flat stretches.
