What this camera shows
This camera provides a live video feed of the I-580 corridor near the Reno-Tahoe International Airport, sitting at an elevation of 4,427 feet. Because this location is lower than the nearby Northgate and South McCarran cameras, it often serves as a key indicator of whether precipitation is falling as rain or snow in the valley floor. If the higher elevation cameras show accumulating snow while this view remains clear, the freezing level is likely holding just above the airport area.
As a live video stream, this feed is particularly useful for gauging traffic flow and visibility in real-time. While still images can sometimes mask the intensity of blowing snow or sudden traffic incidents, the movement here allows for a quick assessment of whether vehicles are maintaining speed or experiencing delays. If you see brake lights or stalled traffic in this video, it often suggests that conditions have deteriorated significantly enough to impact the lower valley, even if the mountain passes are seeing the brunt of the storm.
