Looking west toward the canyon exit, this thermal sensor tracks traffic emerging onto the open downgrade after crossing through the mountain. Because the neighboring installations sit at essentially the same elevation, they experience identical precipitation, making this specific vantage valuable for checking how well traffic moves as it transitions out of the sheltered bore.
Drivers gain a direct reading of vehicle speeds and pavement conditions on the westbound descent, where blowing snow or cold air pooling in the canyon can rapidly slicken the lanes.
