Storm alerts
A notification on this device when chain control starts, changes or lifts, or a road closes or reopens. Pick your roads:
An alert is a heads-up that something changed, not a road report, and it can arrive a few minutes after the change. Before you drive, check Caltrans QuickMap or Nevada 511 (nvroads.com), or call 511. A few alerts a day at most; no account, no email, and you can turn them off here any time (what we keep).

What this camera shows
This camera sits at 6,197 feet, positioning it right at the primary chain control point for Northstar. Because it is located between the lower elevations of the Truckee Bypass and the higher peak at Brockway Summit, the view serves as a critical midpoint indicator for changing weather conditions. If the pavement here appears clear while the camera at Brockway Summit shows active snow accumulation, it suggests that freezing levels are hovering right around this elevation. Drivers can use this feed to determine if road surfaces are transitioning from wet to icy before they commit to the steeper climb toward the summit.
Since this is a live video feed, it shows the surface conditions and the traffic crossing them as they are, not a minute ago. If the view is dark or obscured by fog, watch it for a few seconds to confirm visibility before adjusting travel plans. This view is essential for spotting sudden accumulation that might precede the implementation of chain controls at the Northstar entrance.

Chain-control points on SR-267
Caltrans does not control the whole road at once — it sets controls at whichever point matches the snow level, so the same storm produces controls at different places on different days. These are the California-side points, highest first:

| Kings Beach - (Jct. 267/28 - Stewart Way) | 6,538 ft | Kings Beach | Clear |
