What this camera shows
Sitting at 4,402 feet, this view captures the valley floor just before the climb begins toward Golconda Summit, which rises nearly 750 feet higher to 5,150 feet. It rests at about the same height as the neighbouring coverage toward Battle Mountain, making this the reference point for valley conditions between the two higher stretches.
During winter storms, this camera reveals whether precipitation is sticking to the asphalt or remaining as cold rain while the summit above deals with accumulating snow. Watching the live video stream lets drivers track blowing dust or ground-level snowdrifts pushing across the westbound lanes, giving an immediate read on whether trouble is brewing before the highway heads up into the pass.
