What this camera shows

This live video stream captures traffic flow at an elevation of 4,909 feet. Because this camera sits between the lower elevation cameras at Pyramid Way and Rock Blvd and the higher chain-control points near the Gold Ranch stateline, it provides a critical intermediate view. When conditions are marginal, this feed helps determine if precipitation is transitioning from rain to snow or if the roadway is beginning to accumulate slush before vehicles reach the higher, more exposed grades near the California border.

Since this is a live video feed, it offers a real-time assessment of traffic speed that static images cannot provide. Observing the movement of vehicles here allows drivers to gauge if traffic is slowing down or coming to a halt well before reaching the Mogul control point, which sits about 2 miles away.
