Sitting at 5,748 feet, this location marks the transition onto the higher desert plateau. It stands about 400 feet above the valley floor to the west, while sharing essentially the same elevation as the next pass just to the east. Because there are no designated chain-control points in this area, drivers rely on this specific view to determine where valley rain turns to sticking snow during colder winter storms.
When the lower stretch shows bare, wet asphalt but this feed displays accumulating slush or drifting snow, it confirms the freezing line has dropped onto the plateau. The live video stream reveals how the open wind is moving across the travel lanes, letting drivers spot blowing ground blizzards and localized drifting that often develop here even when higher summits remain passable.
