Storm alerts
A notification on this device when chain control starts, changes or lifts, or a road closes or reopens. Pick your roads:
An alert is a heads-up that something changed, not a road report, and it can arrive a few minutes after the change. Before you drive, check Caltrans QuickMap or Nevada 511 (nvroads.com), or call 511. A few alerts a day at most; no account, no email, and you can turn them off here any time (what we keep).

What this camera shows
At 5,038 feet, this location sits in an open basin where passing storms can drop snow straight onto the lanes, even without a formal chain-control point established nearby. It shares virtually the same elevation as the Carlin Tunnel view to the west, so winter conditions here mirror what drivers encounter just outside the bore. Watching vehicle speeds on the live video stream reveals whether traffic is moving at normal highway pace or already braking for slick patches and sudden ground blizzards across the valley floor.
Looking east toward the junction view at 5,151 feet, the slight rise across the valley can catch colder air and drifting slush earlier than this lower floor. Comparing the two views shows whether freezing temperatures are settling entirely across the basin or staying confined to the higher ground beyond town. When the pavement here stays bare and wet, travel through the immediate basin remains steady, but sudden snow cover signals that the entire stretch is turning slick.
