What this camera shows
At 4,538 feet, this location sits about 250 feet higher than the valley floor view just down the grade, but roughly level with the chain-up area farther east. Because it occupies the middle ground between the lower basin and the approach toward higher terrain, it shows the transition where rain often turns to slush before heavier accumulation begins at the summit.
Drivers can watch the live video stream here to track how quickly surface conditions deteriorate before reaching the formal staging areas ahead. If pavement here remains bare while the higher camera shows white lanes, travel is proceeding normally through the corridor. Once snow sticks to the roadbed at this height, traffic typically slows, and surface freezing tends to spread down toward the lower mile marker shortly afterward.
