What this camera shows
At 4,646 feet, this location sits at about the same height as the floor of the valley just to the west, remaining well below the 5,150-foot summit ahead. Because it sits roughly 500 feet lower than that crest, pavement down here often stays merely wet when freezing conditions take hold higher up. Watching this feed reveals whether winter conditions are descending from the pass or remaining confined to the higher ground.
When the higher summit camera shows accumulating snow and this lower pullout displays clear asphalt, traffic still has room to prepare before making the climb. The live video stream lets drivers judge how actively freight traffic is pulling off to mount chains, or gauge the movement of blowing drifts across the lanes, long before the pavement itself begins to hold packed snow.
