What this camera shows
At 6,071 feet, this view captures the crest of the pass, standing roughly 200 to 400 feet above the dedicated chain-up areas on either side. When storms move through the region, freezing levels often hover between the valley approaches and the top. Watching this stretch reveals whether heavy accumulation is staying confined to the crest or beginning to creep down toward the lower staging spots.
If slush or packed snow covers the travel lanes here while the lower stations show plain wet asphalt, it indicates that winter conditions have taken hold across the peak before reaching the approaches below. Monitoring the motion through the live video stream helps determine if vehicles are maintaining posted speeds over the summit or already slowing for slick pavement before any official restrictions take effect.
