Storm alerts
A notification on this device when chain control starts, changes or lifts, or a road closes or reopens. Pick your roads:
An alert is a heads-up that something changed, not a road report, and it can arrive a few minutes after the change. Before you drive, check Caltrans QuickMap or Nevada 511 (nvroads.com), or call 511. A few alerts a day at most; no account, no email, and you can turn them off here any time (what we keep).

What this camera shows
At 5,905 feet, this spot shares an elevation with the town control point and sits roughly 500 feet below the Donner Lake Interchange. When a storm drops snow to this level, restrictions that began higher up the mountain tend to shift down to catch vehicles before the climb. Watching the live video stream reveals whether slush is beginning to accumulate on the lanes or traffic is queuing up as crews establish checkpoints here.
Comparing this view to the Donner Lake camera three miles away tells you precisely where the storm boundary sits on the grade. If pavement looks merely wet here while Donner Lake shows packed snow, controls will hold higher up, giving drivers time to prepare. Once the road surface turns white at this level, chain enforcement has almost certainly expanded downward from the interchange.
