Storm alerts
A notification on this device when chain control starts, changes or lifts, or a road closes or reopens. Pick your roads:
An alert is a heads-up that something changed, not a road report, and it can arrive a few minutes after the change. Before you drive, check Caltrans QuickMap or Nevada 511 (nvroads.com), or call 511. A few alerts a day at most; no account, no email, and you can turn them off here any time (what we keep).

What this camera shows
This view sits at an elevation of 5,898 feet, placing it just slightly below the chain-control point at the Truckee interchange. Because this camera is positioned lower than the Donner Lake Interchange, it serves as a critical transition indicator for drivers heading west. If this frame shows clear or merely wet pavement while the higher-elevation cameras display active snowfall or accumulation, you can anticipate that road conditions are worsening as you climb toward the summit. Conversely, if snow is already sticking here, the higher passes will almost certainly require chains or snow tires.
Since this is live video, it shows both current surface conditions and how the traffic on them is actually moving. A dark or obscured frame does not necessarily mean the road is closed, but rather that visibility is currently limited by weather. It is best to wait for the next refresh to confirm whether the view has cleared before making travel decisions based on what appears to be a blocked lens.
