What this camera shows
At 4,650 feet, this view sits down on the valley floor, essentially at the same height as the border crossing down the road. It rests roughly 1,300 feet below the summit camera to the west. Because there are no designated chain-control points anywhere nearby, winter travel here is less about checkpoints and more about reading the pavement directly from the screen.
When the pass above shows accumulating snow and slush, this valley stretch often stays wet or bare, marking where the colder mountain system gives way to open desert. The live video stream lets drivers judge wind-driven drifting and blowing dust across the lanes before making the climb toward the higher pass, where conditions can change abruptly over that 1,300-foot rise.
