Storm alerts
A notification on this device when chain control starts, changes or lifts, or a road closes or reopens. Pick your roads:
An alert is a heads-up that something changed, not a road report, and it can arrive a few minutes after the change. Before you drive, check Caltrans QuickMap or Nevada 511 (nvroads.com), or call 511. A few alerts a day at most; no account, no email, and you can turn them off here any time (what we keep).

What this camera shows
At 4,949 feet, this stretch sits about 900 feet below the westbound chain-up area at Emigrant, while sharing essentially the same elevation as the Carlin Tunnel camera just down the corridor. Because the highway agency publishes no chain-control point in the immediate vicinity, this location functions as a valley-floor benchmark. During marginal winter storms, watching the live video stream reveals whether snow is actually sticking to the travel lanes or merely falling as rain and slush before the long climb into higher terrain begins.
When the higher pass at Emigrant reports heavy accumulation and requires traction devices, this view clarifies just how far down the grade those winter conditions extend. Clear or wet pavement here confirms that the freezing level remains well above the lower basin, but if slush begins accumulating on this surface, drivers can expect chain requirements to expand downhill toward this altitude shortly.

Chain-control points on I-80
Caltrans does not control the whole road at once — it sets controls at whichever point matches the snow level, so the same storm produces controls at different places on different days. These are the California-side points, highest first:
